Being transgender and my ignorance on the topic

I was speaking to someone today about being transgender and they told me that they had a nephew who was born female, had fully transitioned to male but was attracted to men.

I said that if I understood what she’d said, her nephew seemed to fit the ‘gay male’ category and this seemed to confuse them more.

They said “Well, if she was attracted to men, why transition to male” to which I replied “His gender identity maybe male but his sexual orientation maybe gay, but don’t quote me on that”.

I also said that “Someone will identify as a particular sexual orientation and their gender identity should be considered separately”

This seemed to help them understand his decision and they said, with some embarrassment, that they felt a little ignorant that they’d not understood their nephews reason to transition.

I said ignorance isn’t a bad thing, refusing educate yourself is.
